      • John was born in 1857 in Hamble le Rice, Hampshire.

In 1861 John was living with his parents and siblings Elizabeth and William at Hamble.

In 1871 14 year old John was living with his mother and stepfather at Hamble. Also at the address were siblings Elizabeth Vant, 11, William Vant, 10, Albert, 8 and Emma Vant, 6.

In 1881 John was a Wheelwright living with his uncle, Thomas George Price, 58 a Beer Retailer and his wife Mary Ann Price [nee Gill], 58 at 74 Rifleman Terrace [Beer House] in Chatham, Kent.

On 3 June 1882 John married Elizabeth Mary Foster at Alverstoke, Hampshire.

[An interesting fact about Elizabeth's relations is: Elizabeth had a widowed Aunt by marriage who lived at Forton, Mary Diane Foster {perhaps the widow of Elizabeth's father's brother}. Mary married again on 8 May 1869. She married James Plummer, a widower born in Great Yarmouth who was a private in the Royal Marines, perhaps stationed at HMS St Vincent. He later became Landlord of the Sun {PH} at Stubbington. Mary's father was James Tyrrell, a mariner and James' father was James Plummer a butcher. The Plummers and the Vants were very close. There is a photograph {unfortunatly not seen by JT} of them all at a family wedding taken at Stubbington]

From 1889 [or earlier]-1891 the family were living at 17 Whitworth Road, Gosport.

In 1898/99 the address in Kelly's Directory was Knox Road, Landport.

In 1901 John was living with wife Elizabeth Mary at 13 Cardiff Road, Portsmouth. Their children, Mary Ann, 17 a Pupil Teacher in a Board School, Emma Maidee, 15 a Cashier in a Chemist, William Foster, 12 a Clerk in a Chemist, Thomas George, 10, Marjorie E K , 6, Elsie Marion, 3 and John Albert, 1 were with them.

John died on 8 February 1904 aged 47 at 13 Cardiff Road, Portsmouth. Cause of Death was Phthisis Pulmonalis & Exhaustion.
